Healthcare Needs AI Explorers
We cannot purchase fluency. We can only create the conditions for our colleagues to develop it.

Healthcare can’t learn AI through committee. We need explorers.
The standard pattern: steering committee, vendor demo, RFP, pilot proposal, governance review. Months pass. Opinions form. Fluency does not.
Committees evaluate AI from the outside. They produce assessments, not capability. They run pilots.
Explorers, on the other hand, map territory nobody has seen yet. We need to stop running pilots and start empowering explorers.
Explorers are the physicians, nurses, and administrators who already want this. The ones finding workarounds despite institutional friction. Put the tools in their hands. Not for a use case. For their entire role.
Living in AI means that AI becomes the substrate, not an errant tool that gets picked up for a task. Drafting, querying, summarizing, scheduling, thinking. The interaction patterns only emerge when use becomes habitual.
What explorers bring back:
- Which parts of the role AI genuinely enhances
- Which parts it detracts from, and why
- Where it actively gets in the way
- What new workflows emerge that nobody planned
Clinical documentation, chart review, literature synthesis, committee prep. Each surface has its own strengths and risks. We can’t predict them from the outside.
We cannot purchase fluency. We can only create the conditions for our colleagues to develop it.
Who are the explorers in your organization? What would happen if you gave them time, access, and permission to map the territory?
